Sandbach and District University of the Third Age (U3A)  Astronomy group meeting.

This course in basic astronomy usually lasts for one or two terms. While allowing time to answer specific questions and requests, we keep continuous track of the positions of the constellations and planets and explore the ways in which our understanding of how the universe works has changed.

We start with the early Greeks and Egyptians and their naming of the constellations and stars and continue through to the first major change in our idea of the universe the change from an earth centred to a sun-centred universe. (Remember the Galileo claim ... but it does move?) This change was a result of the invention of the telescope in the 1600s.

so we look at telescopes in general and at their modern forms. Since then a number of scientific discoveries have changed the way we perceive the universe, starting with Newton's law of gravity and laws of motion, through to the discovery of radioactivity. Expect anything, from the Greek who measured the size of the earth to the Big Bang theory.
